One Year Operational ReviewJanuary 25 2001 The OCABC Mandate is: To facilitate the disruption and suppression of organized crime which affects British Columbians. We are already expanding our mandate to include a broader provincial scope. We have established partnerships within the lower mainland as well as across the province including Nelson Police Department, the Kelowna detachment of the RCMP, along with RCMP and municipal police on Vancouver Island and throughout the lower mainland. Organized crime operates globally. Therefore, a natural progression in our investigations includes the national and international scene and extensive collaboration with other law enforcement partners. We have partnerships with police agencies across Canada in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Halifax, and Regina. On the international scene, our enforcement efforts have included police from the FBI in Washington, DC; jurisdictions in New Jersey; Seattle, Washington; Oakland and Los Angeles, California along with other US federal agencies such as Customs, Internal Revenue Services, the Security Exchange Commission, the Secret Service and the Border Patrol. We have also worked closely with the Australian Bureau of Criminal Intelligence. There are a number of changes to the federal laws that would ensure more effective enforcement of organized crime. On this public policy front, we were pleased to respond to the invitation from the federal Department of Justice to assist them in shaping legislative strategies that would permit a more effective and efficient fight against organized crime. |
