Marihuana Action Plan Results in 96 Arrests

The first phase of a Marihuana Action Plan initiated by the Regional Operational Police Managers Committee and executed by law enforcement partners from throughout British Columbia, came to a successful conclusion April 7th. 2000. The week long province wide multi-agency approach to marihuana grow operation enforcement, culminated in the arrests of 96 men and women between the ages of 17 and 45 years of age. Arrest warrants have been issued for 16 other males.

Eighty search warrants executed at private residences and warehouses resulted in the following seizures:

  • 14,258 marihuana plants (approximate value 8.2 million dollars)
  • 125 pounds of marihuana packaged for distribution
  • $400,000 in grow operation equipment
  • 2 loaded semi-automatic handguns
  • 6 rifles
  • 2 shotguns

One home was heavily fortified with steel bars on all doors and windows and another had a security system which included 3 exterior surveillance cameras. At least 6 of the grow operations were powered through by- passing B.C. Hydro electrical connections. Eleven children were in the homes at the time of police entry and the Ministry of Children and Families has been notified.

Numerous charges of Production of a Controlled Substance, Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possession of the Proceeds of Crime, Theft of Electricity and several weapons related charges will be laid.
